There’s been a lot of hype around CBD lately. It seems to be a modern panacea for a great variety of health issues. The immediate effects of CBD have been studied extensively. There is great potential for CBD in medicine. Or so we believe right now. But is CBD really harmless? Is it true that if you use CBD for a long time, you will get addicted to it? How does drug addiction work?

To understand how drug addiction works, you need to understand what causes you to get addicted in the first place. The short answer is that the drugs you take react on a chemical level with your brain. They will affect your neurons’ ability to send and receive nerve signals. This is very dangerous because your brain uses nerve signals to communicate with your body.

One common way in which you could become addicted is through dopamine. Dopamine is known as the hormone of happiness. Your brain naturally produces dopamine. You have a reward circuit in your brain. When its reward time, you naturally feel happy.
  • Every time you do something good, your brain releases some dopamine for you as a reward. This can happen when doing sports, finishing a book, playing a game, watching TV. Pretty much every source of entertainment makes you produce dopamine.
  • Many drugs, including Heroin and Marijuana, give your dopamine. This can lead to abnormal dopamine signaling in vast quantities. Your brain responds by sending fewer neurons to your dopamine receptors that end up blocking a lot of the dopamine, the next time this occurs.
  • This is also known as building up a tolerance to a drug. The dopamine hunger pushes you to increase the dosage of your drugs. Then you try to experience the same amount of dopamine as you did in your first time.
  • A problem with this dopamine oversaturation is that your brain stops to produce its own dopamine. It does this because it already receives more than enough from external sources like drugs. This leads to you not experiencing any dopamine when you do something and expect a reward. You don’t feel happiness anymore. You have to go back to your drug to experience the effects of dopamine.

Can CBD be addictive?

The short answer is that CBD alone is not addictive. It doesn’t react with your dopamine receptors directly. So it doesn’t damage your ability to be happy without it. But CBD is closely associated with THC.

THC is the ingredient in Marijuana that gets you high. It’s a dopamine stimulant. This means that with time, your brain will start to rely on Marijuana for its dopamine shots. Note that these effects can be reversed if you stop consuming Marijuana.
As a drug, Marijuana or Cannabis is one of the easiest substances to stop using. Only in rare cases are there physical effects of withdrawal. Usually quitting weed is pretty easy. One might argue that this factor contributes hugely to the reason why people tend to abuse Cannabis.
But this isn’t any of CBD’s fault. CBD oil products, in general, are natural, organic, and safe to use. The chance for you to get addicted to CBD alone is close to 0. It doesn’t interfere with your brain as other drugs do.

CBD products are made from industrial hemp that has 0.3% THC. As a comparison, recreational Cannabis can have 100 times more THC. Cannabis itself is considered non-addictive in general. So CBD is about 100 times less addictive than something found not addictive.

In the end - CBD - addictive or not?

In the end, a big part of addiction comes down to your genes, DNA, emotional state, having experienced abuse and trauma.

There are a lot of factors at play. But even with all of them taken into account, you are not likely to get addicted to CBD. Not by a long shot. That's assuming that the products you use don't have other addictive substances. CBD alone is not the culprit.
